Tawakmuhaduta, "Red Gourd" was the name of a family on the Yankton Sioux reservation. Sophia Flute married Simon Tawakmuhaduta and the entire family changed their name to Antelope later, around the turn of the century. Does anyone know any of the relatives of Simon Tawakmuhaduta/Antelope? or Sophia Flute? I believe that Sophia was from Crow Creek. SZ

Sherwyn, I can tell you that she became a member of the Flandreau Church in app.1874-1876. She joined with my ggggrandfather Jeremiah Campbell aka Pahinsasa and another person Hupayusnawin. On the same newspaper page was the wedding of Harriet Arrow and Zachary Flute. My relatives, Jeremiah and Wakanhiyayewin and John B. Cloud and Ipawega were the witnesses.

Jackie, Thank you, I received the Yankton Censuses yesterday from Trish. They have lots of our family members on it. I really appreciate it. I'll be giving a copy of the records to the Tribe to put in their archives as well. Sherwyn

Hermin,
Sadly this is a very sore point for most people from Santee. There are records there, but they are not being shared with the people. Sound familiar? Anyway thankfully there are people out there willing to help find records and share with others. It is a shame though, that people from the same group are so unwilling to help others.

Hey, peacekeeper I hear you Loud and Clear. The Santee enrollment office does not want to help anyone. The people down there that request information from the enrollment office are treated very poorly. They tell the people there, the Minnesota lawsuit is a big JOKE.. Why bother? Therefore, they make getting any information a root canal. We have tried the Winnebago Agency in Winnebago, Ne.. But as far as I know, they like the people to come there and look at their papers. They don't offer much phone assistance.

hi windeagle, yes it is sad how they treat their own but did you expect them to change? after all they don't have to answer to anyone when it comes to real world common courtesy, their actions or non actions bring a stronger continuity to us "outcasts" which in turn makes us more efficient in our tasks.

Folks: it may be worth a try to threaten them with the Freedom of Information Act, to get them to give you the information/papers you seek.

If you think your experience with the Santee, NB enrollment office was bad, try dealing with the Winnebage BIA office. You can threaten Freedom of Information, and they'll produce...for a mere $30/sheet copying charge. The MPLS Regional BIA office won't even talk to anyone associated with the plaintiff's side of the Wolfchild suit. I called there trying to get general info on how the assignments and alotments of 1886/89 enrollees were handled..nothing beyond who kept the records and where, and they not so politely refused to talk to me.
